Myles Garrett Eyes Historic Sack Record Against Aaron Rodgers
Myles Garrett, the defensive end for the Browns, is nearing a chance to either match or break the single-season sack record, currently shared by both Michael Strahan and TJ Watt. This opportunity comes as the Browns prepare to take on the Steelers in Week 17.
If Garrett succeeds in sacking Aaron Rodgers, it could mirror Strahan’s historic moment on January 6, 2002, when he broke the record against Favre’s Packers. Garrett expressed how significant this matchup is for him, calling it “special.”
“Rodgers is a legend in his own right, and I’m chasing a legendary record,” Garrett shared. “It would be a perfect moment to capture for the wall.”
As it stands, Garrett has racked up 22 sacks, putting him in a position to set a new standard if he secures just one more this weekend. Interestingly, this game presents Garrett’s first chance to sack Rodgers, having faced him twice in the past without achieving that feat.
The Browns previously clashed with the Steelers in Week 6, resulting in a 23-9 win for Pittsburgh. Both Rodgers and Favre share common ground, having starred with the Packers before being traded to the Jets, where their performances were less than stellar.
Even if Garrett manages to tie or surpass the record, it merely adds another layer to the existing parallels in their careers.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged Garrett’s impact in prior matchups, noting, “He has been a challenge for us on the field.” He pointed out that Garrett has recorded five sacks in their last two meetings, and the Steelers couldn’t capitalize on either occasion. Tomlin emphasized the importance of the game, given Garrett’s potential for history.
On a side note, it’s worth mentioning that Watt will not participate in this noteworthy matchup as he continues to recover from a collapsed lung sustained earlier in the month. Though back at practice, Watt isn’t set to play when the game kicks off at 1 p.m. this Sunday in Cleveland.
