NFL Honors Recognizes Top Players
During the NFL Honors event on Thursday night, Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jackson Smith-Njigba were celebrated as the league’s defensive and offensive players of the year, respectively.
Garrett was recognized as the NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the second time, receiving unanimous votes for the honor.
Remarkably, he set a new NFL record with 23 sacks in a single season, surpassing previous record holders, including T.J. Watt and Michael Strahan. This record-breaking feat occurred during the Browns’ last game against the Cincinnati Bengals, where Garrett famously sacked Joe Burrow. The game concluded with a narrow 20-18 victory for Cleveland.
This year marked the first time Garrett reached the milestone of 20 sacks in a season. In addition, he registered 60 tackles, tying his career high, along with three forced fumbles and one pass deflection.
Smith-Njigba Shines in Second Super Bowl Appearance
Meanwhile, Jackson Smith-Njigba played a crucial role in helping the Seahawks advance to their second Super Bowl, where they will face the New England Patriots. Following an impressive season, he was highlighted as one of the premier receivers in the NFL.
This third-year player recorded 119 receptions, leading the league with 1,793 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns—marking his first season achieving double-digit touchdowns. He also topped the league in yards per touch, averaging 14.3.
Interestingly, under the leadership of quarterback Sam Darnold, the Seahawks secured the third spot in scoring and ranked eighth in defensive yards allowed. It’s quite a turnaround, really.
With these achievements, both players have made significant impacts this season, showcasing their exceptional skills and making their teams proud. It’ll be fascinating to see how they continue to develop in the future.
