Myles Garrett's progress in breaking the NFL sack record as he pursues history for the Browns

Cleveland Browns and Myles Garrett’s Remarkable Season

The Cleveland Browns have had a rough season in 2025, but there are glimmers of optimism emerging. Myles Garrett just achieved his 20th sack of the season against the Titans, putting him just 2.5 sacks away from tying the official NFL record for the most sacks in a single season. This situation makes his chances of securing the title quite promising.

There are a couple of significant records to keep in mind. First, the official NFL record stands at 22.5 sacks for a single season, a mark held by TJ Watt of the Steelers since 2021 and Michael Strahan of the Giants, who set it in 2001. The second record is of lesser significance but still noteworthy; it goes back to 1978 and was recorded by Al Baker of the Detroit Lions. Although this record isn’t in the NFL record books because sacks weren’t tracked as a statistic until 1982, fans often regard it as the true standard due to existing film footage.

In order for Garrett to surpass Watt and Strahan and tie Baker, he needs less than one sack per game in the remaining four games of the season. Now, you might think this should be an easy feat, but there are some complications to consider. Garrett’s impressive tally of 20.0 sacks across 13 games is something, but his performance hasn’t always been consistently strong. He had a remarkable total of 9.0 sacks in just two games—against the Patriots in Week 8 and the Raiders in Week 11—yet there were also four games earlier in the season where he recorded fewer than one sack.

This inconsistency makes it difficult to predict whether he can meet this ambitious goal, as it will largely depend on the opponents and quarterbacks he faces in the upcoming weeks.

Fortunately for Garrett, the odds appear to be somewhat in his favor. The quarterbacks he will confront are adept at evading pressure, though their offensive lines aren’t particularly robust. The matchups against the Bills and the Bengals in Week 18 look like potential opportunities for him to make history.

While it increasingly seems like Garrett will indeed break the single-season sack record, it’s kind of mind-boggling to think about it, especially since he’s playing on a struggling team. The possibility of an MVP award might not hold the same weight if the history he can create gets overlooked.
