Mystery donor’s £17.5m gift could turn Scottish estate into rewilding showcase | Scotland

Scottish conservationists hope to convert Highland Sports Estate into a re-wild showcase after the mystery benefactor gave it over £17.5 million to buy it.

The Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT) is best known for its small nature reserve, and has purchased the Inverbloom Estate near Ullapool in northwest Scotland and features an 11-bedroom lodge boasting an indoor swimming pool.

It was given the necessary funds to purchase the Inverbloom by private donors who did not want to name, realizing that 7,618 hectares of real estate would be acquired for conservation purposes.

Mediated by former SWT CEO UBS UK Donor-Advised Foundation – A fundraising tool for wealthy benefactors – It is the greatest gift received by the trust. It is also considered to be one of the largest grants to conservation institutions in the UK.

Featuring a high peak of 999 meters (3,277 feet), the property also has a link to the Force Bridge near Edinburgh.

Sir John Fowler, the Chief Engineer of Force Bridge, owned the Inverbloom, and in 1870 a wrought iron bridge registered in the river broom was built, as well as a second B-list bridge. Deep valleys and magnificent waterfalls Used by kayakers.

Trust CEO Joe Pike said he plans to become a model for rewilding in northwestern Scotland and focus on creating a new Atlantic rainforest. Restoring forests along the river Restoration of degraded peatlands.

Although the inverbloom, which primarily opens the hills, does not have any notable ecological features, she hopes their regeneration work will prove to be a larger rewild catalyst in a wider area.

“We think of so many possibilities for natural recovery. “It fits perfectly with our priorities.”

The SWT ends the deer stalker and grouse shooting. This puts an irritating nearby sports estate at risk as they rely on the free movement of Red Deer to go out to a shooting party.

Conservationists have denounced Scottish mushroom deer populations of overwhelming highland areas and suppressing the natural regrowth of native forests and shrubs. Many conservation-oriented landowners ull deer aggressively to promote regeneration.

“Deer management will be a really important priority,” Pike said. It will be done professionally, but in time local people may be allowed to hunt deer on ad hoc basis, she added.

Built on the courtyard grounds in the late medieval period, Victorian-era lodges are converted to holidays to raise funds for the property, along with rent from the land farm and cottage tenassis.

It adds to the emerging trend of conservation charities and community land acquisitions raising money from luxury tourism.

The Assint Foundation, which purchased 17,806 hectares from the Vesty family on the Assant Peninsula in northern Urapur in 2005, has partnered with the Hotel Group to operate the Glencanisplodge as a boutique hotel.

Pike said he hopes SWT will acquire funds from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and state grants to help pay for peatland and reforestation.

The donor was providing money to support running costs over the next few years. The excess funds will be put into donations to pay for future maintenance and maintenance jobs.

Land reform campaigner Andy Wightman said he is stumped by the takeover as it appears he hasn't stepped up with SWT's core purpose of running a nature reserve. “This is a dangerous business that undertakes real estate of this size,” he said.

“We should have moved across the world where conservation agencies needed to acquire a large amount of land. We should restore the land through cleverly crafted public policies.”
