Emotional Moment Boosts Ciattarelli’s Campaign
On the eve of a crucial election, New Jersey Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli received an unexpected morale boost when his son, U.S. Army Capt. Jake Ciattarelli, surprised him at a campaign rally after returning from a deployment in Kuwait.
The touching reunion took place on Monday afternoon at Murph’s Tavern in Totowa, marking the first stop in D.C. Ciattarelli’s final day of campaigning before the election. While addressing supporters, GOP Chairman Peter Murphy playfully hinted that a special guest had arrived, leading to confusion as Ciattarelli scanned the crowd, trying to figure out who it was.
Then, out of nowhere, Jake appeared in his Army uniform, walking straight to his father for an emotional embrace. The crowd erupted in cheers, underlining the personal stakes involved in Ciattarelli’s attempt to unseat Democrat Rep. Mikie Sherrill.
Jake, who began serving as an Army captain in late 2023, expressed his intention to stay in the U.S. through Thursday to help his father’s campaign. Ciattarelli has often referenced his son’s military service throughout his candidacy, even sharing a social media post earlier, featuring Jake pointing at a “New Jersey Ave” sign in Kuwait.
This surprise, organized by Murphy to lift the candidate’s spirits, occurred at a critical time in a race that has gained national interest. New Jersey’s gubernatorial race is one of only two in an off-year, often acting as a bellwether for midterm congressional elections. Current polls indicate a tight contest, showing Ciattarelli trailing Sherrill by about 3.3 percent.
Ciattarelli, endorsed by Trump, has focused on emphasizing the need for change, criticizing nearly 25 years of Democratic governance in Trenton for high property taxes and declining public safety and education.
In response, Sherrill has primarily attempted to link Ciattarelli to Trump, claiming he lacks the independence to deviate from the former president’s agenda. “Mikie, as they call her — her only asset is her unusual name; other than that, she’s terrible,” Ciattarelli remarked, adding that her energy policies would further increase costs in New Jersey.
Later that evening, Ciattarelli participated in a tele-rally with Trump to motivate Republican voters, especially as registration among Republicans has risen since 2021. Trump had previously supported Ciattarelli before early voting commenced.
Reflecting on the emotional reunion, Ciattarelli expressed surprise at the unexpected visit. The moment quickly gained traction in media, capturing the excitement of the crowd and being shared widely on social media platforms.
As New Jersey voters prepare to cast their ballots, the Ciattarelli family’s emotional gesture underscores the human element behind political campaigns. With plans to campaign in Neptune City and finish with a rally in Raritan, Ciattarelli ended the day feeling uplifted, backed by the support of his “biggest fan.”
