Nadler Endorses Mamdani Following Surprising Primary Win
Representative Jerry Nadler has endorsed New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani after the 33-year-old state legislator unexpectedly triumphed over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary on Tuesday.
Nadler characterized Mamdani’s win as reminiscent of former President Obama’s breakthrough, dubbing it an “earthquake election.” This endorsement marked the first public backing reported by the New York Times.
In the same primary, Nadler also endorsed former city secretary Scott Stringer, who is predicted to place low in the ranked selection process. He praised Mamdani as a candidate who could energize the left in opposition to President Trump’s policies.
“The voters in New York City are calling for change, and Zoran’s victory pushes back against Donald Trump’s tax cuts and authoritarian approach,” he remarked to the Times.
As a leading figure in New York City’s Jewish community, Nadler’s endorsement comes amid Mamdani’s contentious comments regarding Israel and the Gaza conflict, which led some to label him as anti-Semitic.
“I spoke with him today about his determination to combat anti-Semitism. We are committed to collaborating with all New Yorkers to tackle prejudice and hatred,” Nadler stated, according to the Times.
Despite Nadler’s support, other prominent Democrats from New York have been hesitant to rally behind Mamdani, who has shifted from a lesser-known candidate to a likely Democratic nominee for mayor, with the final ranked choice votes set to be counted on July 1st.
Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Hakeem Jeffries, who did not endorse Mamdani during the primary, offered congratulations on Wednesday but have not committed to supporting him further.
“He ran an impressive campaign that resonates with New Yorkers regarding affordability, fairness, and opportunity,” Schumer commented in a tweet.
Other Democrats in the New York Congressional delegation, including Representatives Tom Suozzi, Adriano Espaillat, Gregory Meeks, and Richie Torres, opted to support Cuomo instead.
“I had serious reservations about Congressman Mamdani yesterday, which is part of the reason I backed his opponent. Those concerns still exist,” Suozzi tweeted on Wednesday.
