Najee Harris Injured in July 4th Fireworks Incident
Najee Harris has become the latest NFL player to be injured during a July 4th fireworks display.
The Chargers running back reportedly sustained a minor eye injury during the celebration. According to Harris’ agent, Doug Hendrickson, who spoke with NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the injury appears to be superficial.
There were additional injuries reported among other attendees as well.
Rapoport further mentioned that Harris is still “fully expected” to be ready for the upcoming NFL season.
This accident took place in Antioch, California, in the early hours of July 5th. Reports indicate that Harris was treated at John Muir Hospital in Concord before being transferred to Stanford Hospital.
Harris, a native of nearby Martinez, attended high school in Antioch.
The Antioch Police Station shared details on their Facebook page, stating that at 12:18 a.m. on July 5th, dispatch received several calls regarding an explosion on Spanos Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered the aftermath of an explosion caused by fireworks.
Originally from Alabama, Harris signed a one-year, $5.25 million contract with the Chargers this offseason after spending the first four years of his career with the Steelers.
In those four seasons, the 27-year-old consistently rushed for over 1,000 yards. Last season, he tallied 1,043 yards along with six touchdowns.
During his rookie year in 2021, he was named a Pro Bowler, rushing for 1,200 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns overall.
Fans on social media quickly drew comparisons between Harris and former NFL player Jason Pierre-Paul, who famously lost part of his finger while handling fireworks back on July 4th, 2015.
Interestingly, another player, former Buccaneers cornerback CJ Wilson, also suffered a similar mishap on Independence Day in the same year, resulting in the loss of two fingers.
For now, there’s no indication that Harris’s injury is anything beyond an unfortunate accident during a festive celebration.
