TUCSON, Ariz. – Investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance
In the case of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, it appears that the Pima County Sheriff’s Office has limited experience in its homicide unit. Reports indicate that only one detective has been on the job for over two years. According to Sheriff Chris Nanos, there’s a consensus among investigators that Guthrie, who is 84, was forcibly taken from her Tucson home in the early hours of February 1.
Interestingly, all detectives involved seem to be familiar with the department, though it’s unclear what previous roles they held before this assignment. As for the FBI’s involvement, their future role remains uncertain, but notably, they revisited Guthrie’s home this past weekend and took possession of certain evidence.
Issues surrounding the investigation also surfaced, particularly regarding delays in communication with federal agents during the initial stages. Law enforcement officials acknowledged that it took some time before federal assistance joined the effort.
Jonathan Gilliam, a former FBI agent, commented on the situation, stating that the inexperience among those leading the investigation reflects a significant issue within the sheriff’s management. He expressed concern that, given the circumstances, Sheriff Nanos should not be leading such a critical investigative team.
Adding to the complexity of the case, there are reports of a potential ransom note being linked to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, which law enforcement is currently examining.
Meanwhile, Sheriff Nanos was recently seen at a University of Arizona basketball game, a sight that raised eyebrows as Savannah Guthrie, Nancy’s daughter and a host on NBC’s “Today” show, was actively seeking attention on social media for her mother’s safe return.
The deadline set for any ransom demand has now passed, raising concerns about the direction of the investigation. An FBI spokesperson stated there’s been no recent communication between the Guthrie family and the alleged kidnappers. They emphasized that FBI teams have been tirelessly working for over a week to reunite Nancy with her family and urged the public to assist by providing any helpful information.
As of now, there are no suspects identified, and the FBI has established a 24-hour command post, continuing to seek the public’s cooperation in this urgent matter. Since someone out there might possess crucial information, they are encouraged to reach out to the FBI.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has been contacted for further comments, but a response is pending.
