Investigation Continues into Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance

TUCSON, Ariz. — It’s been nearly six months since Nancy Guthrie was allegedly abducted from her home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills. Despite a substantial seven-figure reward, no one has come forward. Veteran investigator Jason Pack suggests that if the masked intruder had any assistance, it likely came from a small, tight-knit circle. “This tells me that the group involved is very limited, and their connections run deeper than money—perhaps through blood ties or shared experiences,” said Pack, a former FBI negotiator actively monitoring the case. “As long as that bond exists, it’s tough to break.”

Interestingly, the more people who are aware of a crime, the greater the chances are that someone will eventually step forward for a reward. As of now, the total reward amount has exceeded $1.2 million, yet it remains unclaimed 179 days after Guthrie’s alleged kidnapping.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos expressed optimism regarding the case’s resolution, despite the lengthy time frame. He firmly believes that it will be solved.

Pack, who has dealt with similar cases before, stated, “Usually, a significant amount of money can drive a wedge between people, but I don’t think that’s the case here.” Instead, he remains hopeful about the potential clues that could break the case open.

“In my experiences, many of these cases resolve in unexpected ways,” he noted. Sometimes, those arrested for unrelated crimes inadvertently reveal information, or personal relationships lead to significant changes in behavior—family dynamics shifting after months of carrying a heavy burden can do that. Six months is quite a long time to bear such a weight.

Furthermore, former detectives suggest the complexity of this case recalls theories rooted in criminal undertones, hinting towards an organized structure behind it. Pack speculated that the kidnappers may have planned their actions but faltered along the way—part of the reason it’s been so difficult to unravel.

Nancy, 84, is the mother of NBC’s “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie and relies on heart medication while having a pacemaker. Her limited mobility adds urgency to the search.

Pack addressed the local community, urging them to revisit their surveillance footage: “Look back at your cameras—be it doorbell, dashcam, or any other recording device. They might have archived data that could prove pivotal.” He emphasized that if anyone remembers unusual behaviors in their network during February, it’s worth reporting, even if they’re not entirely sure it’ll lead to something.

Pima County law enforcement has also been utilizing advanced DNA technology as part of the investigation. Sheriff Nanos confirmed that DNA evidence and wide-ranging video surveillance remain central to their ongoing inquiries.

Pack pointed out that many cases take significant time to resolve; in fact, he’s seen families wait for years before receiving answers.
