Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) is raising questions about the eligibility of Darin Graham, President Trump’s choice to fill the late Sen. Lindsey Graham’s position, in South Carolina’s Republican primary. Mace expressed her skepticism, stating that Graham lacks a record and might not even be eligible to vote. She shared these concerns during a Fox News interview.
This comes shortly after Sen. Darling Graham announced on Fox News his intention to participate in next month’s special primary election to complete his brother’s Senate term. Mace remarked that, while she feels sympathy for the Graham family during their loss, she finds it hard to overlook Graham’s inexperience and possible ineligibility.
Echoing Mace’s concerns, South Carolina Republican Party Chairman CJ Westfall mentioned that the party is looking for an official determination on Graham’s eligibility after receiving feedback from local voters about her qualifications, especially her political experience and voting history.
Mace stated, “It’s unclear if she has participated in enough Republican primaries to be on the ballot,” highlighting the new state election law which requires voting in two of the last three primaries. She has chosen to back Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) for the Senate seat instead, calling him a proven conservative with a perfect voting record. “It’s a unique chance to bring a strong conservative voice to the Senate,” she added.
Despite Mace’s reservations, President Trump openly supports Graham’s bid, urging her to “Run, darling, run” after their meeting in the Oval Office. Yet, Mace isn’t convinced that Trump’s backing will significantly sway South Carolina voters. “I think they lean conservative but have an independent streak,” she said, noting that voters generally choose based on their beliefs rather than external pressure.
