Nancy Mace challenges trans suspect who threatened her life: ‘This is serious’

Rep. Nancy Mace, representing South Carolina, expressed praise for a local judge during a recent court hearing. The case involved Samuel Theodore Cain, who goes by “Roxie Wolfe,” a transgender individual charged with making explicit threats against Mace and her child. Cain was taken into custody on May 15, and as of now, a trial date has yet to be established.

The judge’s comments highlighted the gravity of the threat directed at Mace. “Mr. Cain, I regard you as a genuine threat. You’ll remain subject to this bond, which prohibits any contact with the victim,” the judge stated.

Mace, who had traveled from Washington, D.C., took the opportunity to speak as both a victim and a member of Congress. “I’m here not just as a victim, but as someone who has faced persistent threats in my life,” she conveyed to the judge.

She elaborated on how this situation has disrupted her life, pushing her to seek safety and increase security measures for her home and her Congressional office. “I felt vulnerable. My staff were vulnerable. My kids were vulnerable,” she reflected. “This kind of threat aims to undermine the very foundations of democracy.”

Outside the courtroom, Mace shared her immediate reaction upon seeing Cain. “My first impression was that he was enormous,” she noted, describing him as well over six feet tall and over 200 pounds, which left her feeling frightened.

As a mother, she was troubled, stating, “All I could think about was his family and my own children, who live in fear of violent threats.” Still, she expressed gratitude for the judge’s ruling, hoping it would serve as a beacon of hope for women facing similar circumstances in the state.

During a moment after the hearing, Mace approached Cain’s father, stating that she extended her hand not out of forgiveness but as an act of grace, emphasizing the importance of recognizing humanity amid serious threats. “I want to thank Samuel Kane’s family,” she commented, underscoring their presence in the courtroom.

She further added that the threat made against her was serious enough to warrant immediate action from Capitol police, who advised her to seek refuge. “No one knew where he was,” she underscored, revealing the anxiety involved.

Mace noted a troubling reality, pointing out how threats have unfortunately become commonplace in daily life. “Every day I feel threatened. This isn’t an isolated case,” she declared. Adding emphasis, she warned, “One day, someone will pull the trigger.” Mace called attention to what she perceives as a rising culture of violence against public officials, particularly women.

“This case reflects a broader pattern,” she explained. “It’s about a culture that normalizes violence against elected representatives.” Mace criticized the Democrats for their inaction and response to such threats, expressing frustration over what she perceives as victim-blaming. “No one reached out to me to condemn this,” she noted.

Mace also shared a photo of Cain in court attire, asserting, “This is not Roxie Wolfe. This person has threatened my life.” She concluded her remarks in court with a heartfelt plea for justice, asserting, “Letting him off would suggest that such threats carry no consequences. This is a crime and must be treated as one.”
