Nancy Pelosi erupts at Jake Tapper regarding insider trading claims

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had a heated exchange on CNN’s “Jake Tapper Live” on Wednesday.

The 85-year-old Pelosi became visibly frustrated when a clip of Trump was shown during the interview, where he claimed he grew up “with inside information.”

“Why should I even bother with that?” she replied, her gestures reflecting her annoyance.

“We’re here to discuss the 60th anniversary of Medicaid, and that’s what I agreed to talk about,” she asserted firmly.

Tapper noted that he simply wanted to provide her a chance to respond to Trump’s claims.

“That’s absurd,” she retorted, making it clear she didn’t appreciate the diversion.

“Honestly, I’m very supportive of efforts to ensure Congress members are held accountable,” she added.

She maintained that she believed no wrongdoing was taking place, but if there was, then consequences should follow. However, she emphasized that this shouldn’t undermine the confidence Americans have in their leaders.

This conversation arose amidst renewed congressional scrutiny on stock trading by lawmakers, prompted by a proposal from Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) aimed at banning officials from owning or trading individual stocks.

The proposal, known as the Pelosi Act, garnered bipartisan backing but faced opposition from most Republicans. It passed the Senate’s Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs by a narrow margin of 8-7.

Initially expressing interest in this proposal, Trump later accused some senators from Missouri of using it to go after Democrats.

Both Trump and Hawley have targeted Pelosi, suggesting there might be grounds to investigate her husband’s business dealings.

Paul Pelosi, her husband, is a California Democratic venture capitalist with an estimated net worth of $262 million. Reports have often highlighted his effective timing in stock trades.

“I’m not concerned about the investments made over the years. It’s not about that. My husband isn’t involved in anything shady,” Pelosi told Tapper.

“But Trump, he’s always projecting his own issues onto others,” she noted, suggesting that Trump deflected attention from his own financial interests.

The motivation for Trump’s comments about the proposal may be tied to a provision in the bill that also includes the president and vice president, although it seems that this provision would not impact Trump or Vice President JD Vance due to prior legal protections.

Pelosi expressed pride in her family and mentioned how Trump attacked her husband’s reputation following a legal issue in 2022.

“I’m not interested in bringing up all the other complaints against him right now, but let’s keep the focus on the Medicaid and Medicare anniversary,” she concluded.
