Pelosi Faces Backlash at Bob Weir Memorial
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who refers to herself as a “Deadhead,” received criticism online after attending a memorial service for Grateful Dead co-founder Bob Weir. Some social media users found her behavior at the event to be unusual.
On Saturday, a large crowd gathered at San Francisco’s Civic Center to pay tribute to Weir, who passed away earlier this month at 78. Attendees included devoted fans, musicians, and politicians, with Pelosi being among them.
During her speech, the 85-year-old Pelosi seemed to sing and sway on stage while musician John Mayer performed “Ripple,” a classic by the Grateful Dead. She appeared to struggle with her words as she talked about Weir’s impact.
At one point, she described Weir, saying he was “not just a musician, he was a magician. He was a force of nature.” Additionally, she took the opportunity to encourage the audience to vote, holding up a placard stating “Vote.” She noted that Weir had given her that sign, emphasizing his love for democracy.
However, many online quickly criticized her actions. One user questioned, “Is Nancy Pelosi drunk at Bob Weir’s Homecoming?” Meanwhile, others pointed out her bright magenta suit, which contrasted sharply with the black clothing worn by most attendees.
Some users expressed confusion about her presence at the event, especially given her recent announcement to retire from Congress in 2027. Remarks included, “Why is [Nancy] Mr. Pelosi speaking at this Bob Weir memorial service?” and “My bingo card today didn’t show Nancy Pelosi singing ‘Ripple’ with John Mayer at Bobby Weir’s send-off.”
Notably, folk singer Joan Baez and country artist Wynonna Judd also performed at the memorial. Weir, who had fought cancer, died on January 10, as confirmed by his family. They shared that he passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after battling lung complications.
Nancy Pelosi was not available for comment following the event.
