Nancy Pelosi says she ‘would never recommend’ Biden debate Trump on stage after surprise announcement

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday shared her personal thoughts on the debate between President Biden and former President Trump.

“I personally would never recommend getting on stage with Donald Trump, but the president has decided that’s what he wants to do,” Pelosi said. “I think the format he is proposing is a good one.”

Biden and Trump agreed Wednesday morning to hold two debates, the first on June 27, hosted by CNN, and the second on September 10, hosted by ABC. The Biden and Harris campaigns called for debates to be held inside television studios and for microphones to be automatically disconnected after a speaker’s time limit expires.

Pelosi also suggested that instead of debates, she would like to hold “individual town hall meetings” for each candidate and “ask questions about the future” to the audience.

The final debate between Trump and Biden in 2020 was particularly heated, with the two candidates clashing over the coronavirus and the economy. Pelosi detailed her concerns about Trump’s demeanor during the debate, referencing one of the most famous debates between Trump and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential race.

“I think he was stalking Hillary Clinton,” she said, according to CNN’s Manu Raju. “He was unprofessional, he wasn’t presidential, he didn’t live up to the dignity of a president.”

In her 2017 book, “What Happened,” Clinton recounted an experience in which Trump closely followed her on stage while fielding questions from a live audience.

“I thought this wasn’t right,” she wrote.

“It was the second presidential debate and Donald Trump was closing in on me,” she wrote, adding that she considered telling Trump to “stand back.”

Biden’s announcement that he wants to debate Trump comes amid numerous polls showing Trump leading Biden in five of the six battleground states. President Trump told Fox News Digital that he would accept Biden’s challenge to the debate.

“bent joe biden President Trump said: “Mr. Crooked is the worst debater I’ve ever faced. He can’t put two sentences together. Mr. Crooked is also the worst president in American history by far.” he said.

The Trump campaign did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
