Nancy Pelosi Suggests Reporter Would Be a Good Fit for Alcatraz Prison

Pelosi Discusses Alcatraz During Interview

California Representative Nancy Pelosi spoke with Scripps News about the potential reopening of former prisons, including Alcatraz.

Nathaniel Reed, a congressional correspondent, inquired about the timeline for making Alcatraz operational for inmates. Pelosi responded, noting that it largely depends on the anticipated number of prisoners.

Reed tweeted, “What you can’t make up: FMR. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi today proposed that I be a ‘good candidate’ for moving to Alcatraz.”

She referenced the historical figure Napoleon Bonaparte, joking about the idea of an exile reminiscent of Elba. “Or that’s for hundreds, but I don’t think it’s going to happen,” she remarked before asking Reed if he had visited Alcatraz.

When he confirmed that he had, she followed up, “So you wouldn’t want to live there as a prisoner, right?” His response, however, wasn’t clearly audible.

With a laugh, Pelosi said, “Well, you’ll be a good candidate like you are now, I don’t know.” Critically, she described President Donald Trump’s plans to reopen Alcatraz as “the stupidest idea this administration has proposed.”

Trump had previously mentioned that “conceptual work” had started on the prison reopening, stating that multiple prison companies were exploring collaboration on the project. He originally put forth the idea on May 4, highlighting concerns about violent criminal offenders in society.

According to Trump, together with the Department of Justice and other agencies, there’s a concerted effort to bring Alcatraz back as a facility for the nation’s most dangerous criminals, positioning the reopening as a symbol of law and order.
