Rumors are swirling about former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi potentially exiting Congress. Reports indicate that Pelosi, who represents California, is expected to make an announcement regarding her political future after the upcoming Election Day. Sources suggest it’s likely she will retire at the conclusion of her current term.
When asked for clarification, Pelosi’s spokesperson declined to discuss her resignation or future plans at all.
Voting is already in progress for the 2025 elections, which will be pivotal in determining Republican control of the House during the 2026 midterms.
Pelosi’s spokesperson, Ian Crager, highlighted her focus on winning a key special election in California, promoting the “Yes on 50” campaign. This initiative is urging voters to permit the state legislature to briefly bypass a nonpartisan redistricting commission to create a congressional map that could favor Democrats in the upcoming midterms.
This strategy, backed by California’s governor Gavin Newsom—a possible contender for the 2028 presidency—comes in the wake of Texas recently adopting a map that advantages Republicans.
One unnamed California House Democrat expressed confidence that Pelosi intends to run again, suggesting that a successful passage of Proposition 50 would be a significant achievement for her.
However, there’s already a competitive atmosphere, as at least two Democrats have announced plans to challenge Pelosi for her seat in California’s 11th District. Among them is state senator Scott Wiener, who recently kicked off his campaign.
Additionally, Saikat Chakrabarti, a former chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and a left-leaning activist, is also entering the race.
Pelosi has had a substantial impact on U.S. politics for many years, having served as Speaker of the House in two separate terms, first from 2007 to 2011 and then again from 2019 to 2023. She began her congressional career in 1987, winning a special election to fill the seat of the late Rep. Sarah Burton.
