Nafisa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx made headlines by reading a statement to the media after Sunday’s game, criticizing the WNBA for its treatment of Caitlyn Clark, ongoing player pay disputes, and issues with host sites.
The Lynx’s playoff run came to an end when they lost to the Phoenix Mercury, 86-81, with Collier sidelined due to an ankle injury. However, she took the opportunity to express her frustrations with the league. In her prepared remarks, she took aim at WNBA commissioner Kathy Engelbert for her thoughtless comments about key players like Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers.
During her address, Collier recounted her conversation with Engelbert. “I asked her how it could be that players like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers—who undoubtedly contribute significantly to the league’s revenue—are compensated so little in their early years. She then told me that players should be grateful for the media rights deal I’ve managed to secure,” Collier relayed.
“This attitude is really damaging to the league. We fight daily to protect our interests, yet it feels like we’re undervalued when we should be celebrated. The league succeeds by putting blame on the players,” she added.
Collier also expressed her frustration over inconsistent officiating by the league’s referees.
“Since I joined, there have been persistent complaints about officiating. But now, we’ve reached a point where contradictions undermine our sport’s integrity,” she noted. “It’s one thing to care for players’ health, but disregarding the quality of play we provide is self-defeating. Every year, there is a lack of accountability among our leaders.”
“There’s this term coming up in CBA discussions—’sustainability’—that, frankly, is why salaries aren’t competitive. But what’s truly unsustainable is allowing our product on the court to suffer while officials lack control of the game. Fans tune in every night, and coaches observe both wins and losses,” she continued.
Collier shared, “Back in February, I sat down with Cathy and asked how we could tackle the issue of hosting. She responded, ‘Only losers complain about the officiating.'”
She revealed her attempts to bring these issues up privately with league officials were met with indifference, which prompted her to voice her concerns publicly.
“The league has shown it’s not focusing on innovation,” Collier contended. “It’s not about collaboration; it’s about exerting control. I’ve worked hard to earn my platform; I feel it’s my duty to advocate for the fans and everyone involved in this league. I’m determined to fight for the rights and fairness our athletes and supporters deserve.”
“We have the best players and fans globally, but sadly, we have the weakest leadership,” she concluded.
