Napheesa Collier wins $200K by taking Unrivaled 1-on-1 crown

Medley, Fla. — Nafeesa Collier of the WNBA Minnesota Links brought home $200,000 on Friday.

Players earn an average salary of over $220,000 during the eight-week season. This is close to the WNBA's maximum base salary.

“My entire WNBA salary is 30 minutes since I played one-on-one,” Collier said. “It's even insane to say. And the same goes for (playing) overseas. Many people, this is their full contract, so you play seven months for this kind of money. It's there.”

Collier, the number one seed in the 30-player tournament, won three best series 2-1 with the eighth seed Edwards, becoming the other 1-1 champion.

Each game during previous UConn standouts was a winning score of 8, with Edwards coming from behind to win the opener, and Collier won the Final 2.

Collier's five unparalleled teammates each received $10,000 from the tournament's $350,000 prize pool. Edwards won $50,000 to reach the final.

Collier hopes women's basketball will accept a one-on-one format.

“You see people and boys playing in the park, like pick-ups and one-on-ones. You don't see that much on the side of the women,” she said. “That's what we're trying to change. Everything is not organized basketball, it's just the atmosphere of playing in the backyard or in the park.”

The victory won Collier's dominant tournament run. Collier plays for the unparalleled moon owl and leads with points scoring at 29.3 points per game.

Earlier on Friday, Collier overwhelmed former UConn teammate and sixth seed Azura Stevens in the semi-finals.

Collier scored the first eight points of the game, and the real-life WNBA defensive player of the year relied on stifling defense to score 11-2.

Collier won the physical second round battle with Riccae Jackson after passing Katie Lou Samuelson in the first round.

She then defeated Lynx and Moon Owl teammate Courtney Williams to reach the semi-finals.

She shot past Edwards in decisive game 3, making four of the six shots, scoreless Edwards.

Playing for the unparalleled fog, Edwards defeated two top-seeded opponents on his way to the finals, cruising past 1 seed Arikeo Gamboir 11-2 in his first semi-final match on Friday .

Before that, she shutdown No. 1 seed Stewart 12-0 in the opening round. After winning the second goodbye, Edwards broke through third seed Alicia Grey 12-6.

Edwards, 22, is preparing for her second season with the Mystic and hopes that Friday's performance shows just how hard she is improving.

“I'm proud of myself. No one could take it from me,” Edwards said. “All the work I put in. I just introduced it and everyone could let it know.

Collier said the physicality of some of the matches left many players in the gas during the tournament.

She wants to see a similar event for NBA players.

“If they want to do it, it's up to the players,” Collier said. “You put your name on the line. You put your reputation on the line. It's a vulnerable situation. Again, anyone can win, so I compete for this. I really praise everyone who has done it.”
