NASA’s Martian helicopter promises unprecedented views of the red planet

When NASA's Ingenuity helicopter flew over Mars in April 2021, it was a historic moment in space exploration.

This small, solar-powered rotorcraft became the first aircraft to achieve powered, controlled flight on another planet.

Now, following Ingenuity's remarkable success, NASA is setting its sights on an even more ambitious aerial probe of the Red Planet.

Legacy of Ingenuity

Ingenuity's trip to Mars far exceeded expectations. Originally designed for only five test flights over a 30-day period, it eventually completed an impressive 72 flights over nearly three years. The helicopter served as the Perseverance rover's aerial reconnaissance vehicle, helping scientists and engineers gather valuable data about Mars' topography and atmosphere.

Throughout its mission, Ingenuity pushed the boundaries of extraterrestrial flight, reaching a maximum altitude of 78.7 feet, achieving a top speed of 32.4 mph, and completing its single longest flight covering 2,310 feet.

NASA's next generation Mars helicopter

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is working on a next-generation Mars helicopter concept that could revolutionize exploration of the Red Planet. This new aircraft is still in the early stages of development and is expected to be a significant upgrade for Ingenuity.

The proposed helicopter has six rotors in a hexagonal configuration and could be quite large, potentially “SUV-sized.” It is capable of carrying up to 11 pounds of scientific payload and can cover up to 3.1 miles of Mars per day.

The increased size and payload will allow the new helicopter to conduct broader scientific surveys and explore areas inaccessible to ground-based spacecraft. This advanced design could allow scientists to quickly and closely study large areas of the Martian landscape, including areas where the rover cannot safely travel.

Before this new helicopter can fly on Mars, NASA must address the challenges facing Ingenuity. The crash landing of a small helicopter in early 2024 provided valuable lessons for future designs. One of the key issues was navigation in featureless terrain.

Ingenuity's vision-based navigation system struggled with Jezero Crater's sandy, rippling surface. “The lack of surface texture meant there was too little information for the navigation system to handle,” explained NASA engineer Hubbard Gripp.

To overcome this, the next generation of helicopters could be equipped with more advanced navigation systems that can operate in different terrains on Mars.

NASA is making significant technological advances in preparation for future Mars helicopters. Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineers have developed new carbon fiber rotor blades that are 4 inches longer than the rotor blades used on Ingenuity.

These next-generation blades have undergone rigorous testing and reach speeds of up to 3,500 rpm, 750 rpm faster than Ingenuity's maximum speed. The new design promises increased efficiency and performance in Mars' thin atmosphere and could enable larger, more capable helicopters for future missions. These advances represent a significant step forward in NASA's ongoing efforts to explore the Red Planet from the air.
