During Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series ToyotaCar 250 race at Richmond Raceway, driver Joey Gase looked like something out of a movie.
Gase’s car was damaged and spun out of the race, but Gase seemed to believe that rival driver Dawson Crum was responsible for what happened.
After getting out of his car, Gase tore off the bumper of the damaged car and walked towards the car, which was still racing.
He waited for Crum to return and threw his bumper at the car, hitting the front and flying over it as the car sped past.
Crum’s car suffered no damage and was able to continue the race.
Ironically, the bumper featured an advertisement for McGruff the Crime Dog’s “Race to Crime.”
After the incident, FOX Sports asked Gase why he threw the bumper at Crum, and Gase said there was some history between the two that likely influenced his withdrawal from the race.
“I think he just wasn’t in the right head,” Gase said. Said. “You know, I gave this kid his first opportunity in Xfinity. I know Johnny Davis is in the business of destroying race cars, but we’re never like that. We are a small team racing hard for the lucky dog, but apparently he doesn’t know how to lift. Maybe his throttle is stuck, I don’t know. I don’t know.”
The race itself was won by Chandler Smith for the second year in a row, and his second win of the season.
With those two wins, three top-five finishes, and six top-10 finishes, Smith could earn the title of driver of the season, at least for now.
Smith is in first place in the Xfinity Series standings with a 10-point lead over Austin Hill.
Hill also has two wins and five top-five finishes this season, but was unable to finish inside the top five in Saturday’s race.
The competition for this season’s championship looks set to be extremely fierce.
