NASCAR honored Kyle Busch on Sunday with a heartfelt tribute alongside his family during the Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, just three days after his passing.
This marked the first public appearance of the Busch family after his death at the age of 41 on Thursday.
Relatives, NASCAR officials, and drivers came together for a touching memorial set up on pit road to honor the life of the driver. According to reports, Busch’s team owner, Richard Childress, attended along with Kyle’s brother Kurt, his wife Samantha, and their son Brexton, who performed “Amazing Grace” while NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell led a moment of silence.
O’Donnell shared, “Every racetrack felt like home to Kyle Busch. He raced with a fire, as if he had something to prove, though in truth, he had already achieved so much. What we’ll miss most isn’t just the wins; it’s the supportive teammate, the advice-giver, the husband, and the father—someone who helped quietly when no one was watching.”
His family confirmed the cause of death on Saturday, stating that he apparently succumbed to severe pneumonia leading to sepsis.
Their statement read, “The medical evaluation concluded that severe pneumonia progressed to sepsis, resulting in rapid complications. The family requests privacy and understanding during this challenging time.”
Busch had been hospitalized after being found unresponsive in a racing simulator. On Thursday, he began vomiting blood and appeared lethargic before passing away later that day.
Reports indicate that Busch’s No. 8 car will be retired until his 11-year-old son Brexton is ready to follow in his father’s racing footsteps.
Richard Childress Racing announced that they would reserve the No. 8 car for Brexton when he is prepared to take the wheel. They stated on social media, “The No. 8 car will be temporarily retired, with the team running the No. 33 car beginning at Charlotte. Kyle Busch was instrumental in designing the No. 8, which has become synonymous with him and holds great significance to his fans and the NASCAR community. It will always be waiting for Brexton when he’s ready to race.”
Kyle Busch is survived by his wife Samantha, their son Brexton, and their daughter Lennix.
