Tony Stewart’s Short Return to NASCAR at Talladega

NASCAR legend Tony Stewart made his second appearance in the Craftsman Truck Series this season, but fans didn’t get to see much of him at Talladega Superspeedway.

Back in February, Stewart returned to NASCAR, driving the No. 25 Ram 1500 for Kaulig Racing. Unfortunately, that outing ended early with a crash after just 39 laps. Anticipations were high for his performance this time around, hoping he could complete the race distance.

He kicked things off decently, qualifying 29th and gaining 11 positions in the first 15 laps. But, on lap 17, things took a turn when Stewart Friesen lost control of his No. 52 Toyota Tundra, leading to a significant nine-car pileup. That put an abrupt end to Stewart’s race — a disappointing outcome considering the potential his truck seemed to have early on.

Just 17 laps. That’s how long fans got to see him on the track this time. Superspeedway racing can be unpredictable; luck often plays a huge role, and it seems Stewart just didn’t have it on this occasion. It’s, I think, part of the sport’s harsh realities.

Reflecting on the incident, Stewart commented, “Yeah, it’s just a racing deal. That’s part of it. Stewart (Friesen) couldn’t go anywhere. He had an issue, and he’s stuck in the middle. So he was doing the best he could to hang onto it, and just everybody around him got caught up in it.”

There’s hope, though. Perhaps Stewart may return to the Truck Series next season, although nothing is set in stone. It sure would be nice to see him have a bit of good fortune next time.

In the end, Sammy Smith from Spire Motorsports took home the win, marking his first career victory in the Truck Series during an overtime finish. It’s exciting for him, especially since he’s been announced as a full-time competitor for Tricon Garage next season.
