Nassar stabbing not captured on prison cameras: report

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that the stabbing to death of infamous former US gymnast Larry Nassar in a federal prison was not caught on camera.

A person familiar with the matter said Nassar was attacked in his cell, blinded by cameras that only show common areas and corridors. He was stabbed multiple times in the neck, back, and chest by another inmate at the Coleman United States Penitentiary in Florida.

He was said to be in stable condition as of Monday.

Nassar was accused of sexual abuse by dozens of gymnasts throughout his career and pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges in 2017. He was sentenced in 2018 to 40 to 175 years in prison.

He was also sentenced to 60 years in prison for possession of child pornography and 40 to 125 years in prison for three counts of sexual assault.

More than 150 people who shared their experiences of abuse by Mr. Nassar, including Olympic gymnasts Arie Riseman and McKayla Maroney, spoke at sentencing hearings or provided written statements to be put on record. .

Nassar has admitted to sexually abusing gymnasts while on the job at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics.

The attack on Nassar in prison is the second time he has been targeted since serving his sentence. He was assaulted in 2018 at a federal prison in Arizona within hours of being held in a general prison.

His lawyers attributed the attack to the high profile of his case and the week-long televised sentencing hearings where victims testified.

Even if the attack itself was not recorded, a camera from outside Nassar’s cell could have captured the attackers entering and leaving Nassar’s cell. Cell doors in most federal prisons are usually open during the day to allow prisoners to move around.
