Rep. Steven Horsford (D-Nevada), chairman of the House Black Caucus, said: He reportedly approached Mr Higgins on the floor of the House of Commons. They demanded that he delete the tweet before announcing his intention to censure Republican lawmakers.

“I hope that every member of this Congress will understand that especially those who serve their communities, those who are entrepreneurial, those who serve their communities as nurses and first responders and teachers, these people, these children, they should no longer have to live in fear or intimidation because of any statement or post made by any member of this Congress,” Horsford said on the House floor.

“It's time to end the hate and hateful rhetoric,” he added. “It is unbecoming of any member of Congress to continue to push this type of rhetoric on any platform, let alone the House of Representatives.”

Mr Horsford then asked MPs to unanimously approve a motion to censure Ms Higgins for “bringing discredit and shame” to the House of Commons.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) opposed the motion.

“First of all, the tweet has already been deleted and removed,” Scalise said.

“If we want to go through all the comments and tweets from the other side, we would be happy to do that. You'd be stunned at some of the stuff that hasn't been deleted,” he argued.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) He told reporters He spoke with Higgins about the tweet and suggested his Louisiana colleague “regrets it.”

“His colleagues approached him on the floor and said it was unpleasant,” Johnson said. “He went to the back and said I just talked to him about it and he went to the back and said he prayed about it and he regretted it and he pulled the pole down.”

“I'm sure he regrets the words he used, but we're moving forward. We believe in redemption here,” the Speaker added, calling Mr Higgins a “dear friend” and a “very open and forthright person”.
