Natalie Portman Criticizes Federal Immigration Actions
Natalie Portman has expressed strong disapproval of federal authorities and their ongoing immigration enforcement actions, referring to them as perhaps the “worst of humanity.” During a public appearance, she highlighted serious concerns regarding the treatment of individuals under the current administration.
At least six fatalities have been recorded in the U.S. amid the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies. Recently, Alex Preti, a 37-year-old man, was killed by Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis on January 24.
“What’s happening in our country right now—it’s appalling. The federal government, with Kristi Noem and ICE at the forefront, is really doing the worst of humanity,” Portman noted at the Sundance Film Festival. She also praised the community spirit, stating, “I’ve never felt more proud of Americans coming together to support each other and fight against injustice, but I also feel deeply disappointed in our government’s actions.”
John Slattery, known for his role in ‘Mad Men,’ raised questions about the masked ICE officers during an event at Sundance, expressing frustration over the culture surrounding immigration enforcement. “We are citizens observing all this, and it’s just disheartening,” he remarked, wondering aloud why ICE agents seemed to hide their faces.
Preti’s death occurred shortly after another tragedy involving U.S. citizen Renee Good, who was shot multiple times by ICE agents. Officials claim previous confrontations justified their actions, yet the circumstances remain controversial and complicated.
Amy Poehler also took a moment during her podcast to honor the Minneapolis community following these events. She expressed that while the aim of her show is to bring joy, the situation is distressing. “It’s terrifying and wrong, yet heartening to see neighbors helping each other,” she added, encouraging support for local organizations.
The White House is currently addressing investigations concerning the Preti shooting, with both the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI involved. There’s an ongoing internal inquiry by U.S. Customs and Border Protection as well.
In response to Preti’s death, numerous celebrities, including Bella Hadid, have shared their thoughts online, calling for systemic reforms in ICE. Hadid criticized the agency’s aggressive methods, labeling them as “incredible danger” to American values and urging for an overhaul. Mark Ruffalo, a significant opponent of Trump, condemned the actions taken by immigration authorities in a pointed social media post, stressing the brutality faced by individuals on the streets.
Glenn Close also voiced her outrage, condemning the current administration for its perceived inhumanity, and emphasizing the disturbing nature of these events. Jamie Lee Curtis praised individuals protesting against ICE, reinforcing her support for the community impacted by such violence.
As the situation evolves, it highlights complex issues surrounding immigration in the U.S., eliciting strong reactions from public figures and citizens alike.
