Natasha Gregson Wagner Reflects on Her Mother’s Legacy
When Natasha Gregson Wagner was just 11, a typical sleepover took a heartbreaking turn. While at a friend’s house, she heard the unsettling news: her mother, the famous actress Natalie Wood, had died.
In a personal reflection on her fragrance brand’s website, L’Amour Mere, 56-year-old Natasha shared a poignant memory. “As a child, I always recognized my mom was home because of her unique Jungle Gardenia scent,” she wrote. “After she passed, I often found myself lying in her bed or sitting in her closet among her clothes, desperately trying to keep a piece of her scent alive, thinking maybe that would help keep her spirit with me.”
After Wood’s untimely passing, both her biological father, British film producer Richard Gregson, and her stepfather, actor Robert Wagner, united to support Natasha through her grief. She recounted, “I was fortunate to have these two men, Daddy Gregson and Daddy Wagner. They prioritized my well-being and got me into therapy immediately. I continued with the same wonderful therapist until I was in my twenties.”
Natalie Wood, who received three Oscar nominations and stared in classics like “West Side Story,” died during Thanksgiving weekend in 1981. Her body was discovered off the coast of Catalina Island. Initially, her death was deemed an accident, but the case was reopened in 2011 after allegations of a fight on the boat she shared with Wagner and actor Christopher Walken the night she disappeared. In 2012, the Los Angeles County coroner adjusted the cause of death to reflect “drowning and other undetermined factors.”
Wagner was labeled a “person of interest” in 2018, but by 2022, authorities had exhausted all leads and no longer considered him a suspect. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing in his wife’s death.
Natasha mentioned that her two father figures did their best to provide her with a normal childhood despite the media’s constant scrutiny. “I had chores to do. Dinner was served at six. I learned to cook and do laundry,” she recalled. “I even learned how to manage a bath with a hot and cold tap.” She noted that she stayed clear of the drugs and alcohol that can plague the children of famous parents.
“Sure, pressure has been part of my life,” she acknowledged. “I’ve faced painful moments, but my home was filled with safety and warmth. I was fortunate.”
Gregson Wagner has also dealt with the enduring impact of her mother’s absence. “People often stopped me to say I resembled this actress named Natalie Wood. Sometimes I just shrugged it off, saying that I heard that often,” she reflected.
She felt a deep connection with Wood, stating, “We shared so much, I often felt we were intertwined. It was as if she could see into my very thoughts.”
Now married to Barry Watson since 2014, Natasha is a mother to their daughter, Clover. She launched L’Amour Mere to honor her mother and celebrate their bond through scent.
In the 2020 HBO documentary “Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind,” which gathered insights from her family and friends, Gregson Wagner aimed to showcase her mother’s multifaceted life. She hopes viewers will see Wood as “strong, funny, and courageous.” For Natasha, Wood was the architect of her own life, one filled with love and triumph. “She had a great life,” Natasha added. “It wasn’t a long one, but it was her life.”
