Nathan MacKinnon faces backlash as critics bring up his Olympic disappointment

McKinnon Faces Backlash After Olympic Loss

Nathan McKinnon, a standout center for Canada, is likely to remain in the spotlight following his critical mistake during the recent gold medal men’s hockey game at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. In the third period of the match, which ended in a 2-1 overtime loss to the U.S., McKinnon missed a key opportunity to score, a moment that many fans and commentators are now highlighting.

With approximately ten minutes left on the clock, McKinnon, who is currently the NHL’s second-highest scorer, failed to get the puck past U.S. goalie Connor Hellebuyck, which could have tied the game.

This pivotal moment has kicked off a torrent of discussion online. Fans, not just for his miss but also for his spirited post-game comments—“You decide who was the better team today”—are taking to social media to express their thoughts.

One user on X pointed out, “Guys, the TV just froze. Surely Nathan MacKinnon could have easily scored on this wide-open net, right?” They were clearly frustrated by the turn of events.

Another post echoed the sentiment: “Nathan MacKinnon will be haunted by missing this shot for the rest of his life.”

Yet another comment added, “You miss 100% of the shots you never take. Nathan McKinnon misses 100% of the shots that win gold medals.” Humor, even in disappointment, seems to be a coping mechanism for many.

In the overtime period, McKinnon was present on the ice during Jack Hughes’ impressive goal, which solidified the U.S. victory while Canada walked away with silver. McKinnon’s expression of disappointment was palpable, as they lost despite outshooting the U.S. 42-28.

Reflecting on the experience, McKinnon shared, “It’s going to be a while before we get this chance back, which is a real shame. We had so many good looks that really tipped the game, yeah, it was a tough game.” Throughout the tournament, he managed to score four goals for Canada, but the missed opportunities loomed large after the loss.

Hellebuyck shone as the MVP, making an impressive 41 saves out of 42 shots, leading Team USA to its first gold medal in men’s ice hockey since 1980.

McKinnon, who was the Avalanche’s top overall pick in 2013, continues to perform well this season, recording 40 goals and 53 assists across 55 games. The Avalanche’s next match will be against Mammoth in Utah on Wednesday night.
