Summer Dog Day took place at Nationals Park on Saturday.
The highlight was a 21-month-old golden retriever named Bruce, who won the bat during the ceremony prior to the Washington Nationals’ matchup with the Miami Marlins as part of a park promotion.
Bruce had previously demonstrated his bat-retrieving skills while serving with Washington’s Triple-A team, the Rochester Red Wings.
He sported a bandana featuring the “MLB Debut” patch he received upon his arrival at the stadium, and he was also presented with a commemorative bat.
After that, Bruce trotted out from the dugout toward the field. When Nationals player Zach Bruzsky dropped a bat into foul territory, Bruce eagerly retrieved it, much to the crowd’s delight. He seemed genuinely thrilled with his task.
“Just look at this dog—how can you not smile?” said Josh Snyder, Bruce’s owner. “He’s such a fun character. I think he’s just a perfect fit for the Red Wings and now for the Nationals.” Snyder arrived in Washington around 3 a.m. on Saturday after driving overnight with Bruce, proudly wearing a 25th Nationals jersey.
However, Bruce didn’t seem fazed by the early morning; he appeared relaxed as he strolled through the stadium tunnels.
Before the ceremony, Bruce spent about 50 minutes on the field, where he even received some friendly attention from a fan.
With Snyder’s encouragement, Bruce practiced bat retrievals before Nationals catcher Riley Adams stopped by to say hello during warm-ups.
It’s worth noting that Bruce won’t be working during the actual game, as he will return to his Triple-A responsibilities afterward.
This isn’t Bruce’s first time in the spotlight; he’s the second bat dog for Snyder, following the late Milo. Both dogs have supported campaigns to raise funds for the Rochester Veterans Outreach Center and Rochester’s Honorary Flight.
Recently, the Nationals announced Bruce as the team’s new bat dog, which generated quite a buzz ahead of his debut.
“Social media has really blown up about this,” Snyder remarked. “It’s great publicity for our mission, helping connect people with our goals.”
