The Washington Nationals got some good news Sunday as outfield prospect Dalen Lyle was released from the hospital after suffering a horrific spill during a spring training game against the Boston Red Sox.
Red Sox prospect Tyler Miller hit his first home run of the spring in the seventh inning on Saturday, but concerns arose when Lyle, aiming for a miracle home run, flipped over the bullpen wall and landed with great force.
It was reminiscent of Torii Hunter’s infamous flip on David Ortiz’s game-tying grand slam at Fenway Park in Game 2 of the 2013 ALCS. JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Florida, home of the Red Sox in the spring, has the same low outfield wall in right field modeled on Fenway.

Although the broadcast did not show Lyle falling into the bullpen, relief pitchers and staff members who were present immediately signaled for a trainer to come check on him. They kept waving their hands until people showed up to assess what had happened.
Lyle was eventually carried out of the stadium on a stretcher, and it was feared that something serious had happened.

Fortunately, Lyle was diagnosed with a lower back contusion after spending time in the hospital for tests, and it appears Nats was able to avoid anything worse.
“I mean, he’s hurting,” Nationals manager Davey Martinez said Sunday, according to ESPN. “But he’ll be fine. That’s great news. We were lucky.”

After Saturday’s game, Martinez said a CT scan of Lyle’s back will be performed and that he has movement in his arms and legs.
Lyle also gave a thumbs up to the crowd, showing some optimism despite his situation.
The 21-year-old was a second-round pick by the Nats in the 2021 MLB Draft. He played in 19 games in his rookie year, but required Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2022 season.
Lyle split the 2023 season between Low-A and High-A ball, hitting .291 with an .891 OPS in 66 games in Low-A.

In 40 games in High-A, Lyle struggled to hit .234/.310/.357.
