Nationals run into horrific double play against Yankees in brutal baserunning blunder

The Nationals were hit with a wild double play on Wednesday night against the Yankees.

It all started in the bottom of the eighth inning, with runners on first and second and no outs, when Jose Tena hit a fly ball over the head of center fielder Aaron Judge.

The ball bounced off the wall and Judge put it in the hands of shortstop Anthony Volpe.

That's when things got strange.

Leadoff runner Joey Gallo slowed near third base, and trailing runner Juan Yepes was also heading toward third base.

Both runners are on their own rundown with the ball being handed from the catcher to the first baseman covering second base and then back to the catcher.

Finally, third baseman Jazz Chisholm got Gallo out near third base.

The Nationals could have stopped the damage there and preserved a runner on second and one out, but Tena got out of first.

Chisholm, with Tena trying but unable to get back on base, quickly threw the ball to second baseman Gleyber Torres to complete an 8-6-2-3-2-5-4 double play.

Washington made one of its most embarrassing baserunning errors of the season, leaving it with a runner on second base and two outs.

The Nationals hung in there despite giving up a run in the eighth inning and won, 5-2.
