The self-proclaimed “worst teammates” in baseball form a new team.
Former Mets relief pitcher Jorge Lopez has signed a new contract with the Nationals, the team announced Saturday.
Lopez, a right-handed relief pitcher, caused a lot of controversy last season when he was with the Mets, starting with a game against the Dodgers in May when he was ejected for claiming a check swing and then throwing his glove into the stands. It gained notoriety because of this. He called himself “the worst teammate of all” [f–king] MLB. ”
When confusion arose over his comments, Lopez was asked to clarify whether he meant to say the Mets were “the worst team,” to which Lopez, who is originally from Puerto Rico and whose second language is English, responded, “I guess so.” I answered. It looked like that. ”
The 31-year-old later apologized to the team and teammates, but a later Instagram post was misquoted.
The Mets quickly released Lopez, who then signed him with the Cubs, where he finished the season.
“This is something I never want to do again in my life,” Lopez, who joined the Cubs, told reporters before the game against the Brewers. “It's an emotion.”
Now, he's back in the National League East with a contract and incentives worth $3 million, according to the paper's Jon Heyman.
