Xanax XR Recalled Due to Potential Release Issues
A nationwide recall has been issued for a batch of Xanax XR after the manufacturer realized that it might not dissolve properly in the body as intended.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Viatris, Inc. is conducting a voluntary recall of alprazolam extended-release tablets, specifically the 3 mg dose, from lot number 8177156, which is found in 60-count bottles expiring on February 28, 2027.
Xanax XR is a benzodiazepine often prescribed to help manage anxiety and panic disorders in adults.
This recall has been classified as a Class II issue. In simpler terms, it might result in temporary health effects that are not serious, but it’s not entirely risk-free.
A “failed dissolution specification” has surfaced, meaning the tablet might not release the medication at the correct rate. Since Xanax XR is designed for a gradual release, these variations can impact how effectively the drug works.
The recall applies to specific lots only, even though the products were distributed across the U.S. As of now, there’s no end date to the recall, which the FDA has deemed ongoing.
A spokesperson for Viatris has stated that the scope of this recall is fairly limited and doesn’t pose a major risk to patients. They mentioned that only one lot of the 3 mg branded product is involved, with just 51 bottles sent to wholesalers between August 27, 2024, and May 29, 2025. Other batches, including generics, remain unaffected.
The spokesperson also pointed out that most prescriptions in the U.S. are for generic alprazolam and therefore are not impacted by this particular recall.
“The risk to patients associated with this event is thought to be minor. So far, we haven’t received reports of any adverse reactions relating to this lot,” the spokesperson added.
The recall process is underway at the retail level. Pharmacies and wholesalers have been told to return the affected products.
Patients are not required to take any action, according to the company. It’s somewhat relieving, I guess, knowing that most people likely aren’t going to be affected by this issue.
