NATO Promises to Protect 'Every Inch' After Russian Drone Strikes Apartment

NATO Responds to Drone Incident in Romania

NATO has stated it is “prepared to defend every inch of Allied territory” following a concerning event where a Russian Shahed suicide drone entered EU airspace and struck an apartment complex in Romania, injuring two individuals.

In response, Romania deployed two F-16 fighter jets overnight to intercept the Russian drone. Unfortunately, just four minutes elapsed from when the attack was detected to the drone crashing into the side of an apartment building in the southeastern town of Galati. This area, situated along the Danube River at a three-way border with Moldova and Ukraine, has frequently been targeted by Russian assaults due to its significance to Ukraine’s economic stability.

Romania has experienced previous Russian airstrikes close to its borders, particularly near the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Odessa and other sites along the upper Danube. Reports indicate that Romanian troops have witnessed drones striking targets a mere 200 meters from their positions. After the recent incident in Galati, local residents have been provided new emergency air raid shelters, reflecting a rise in attacks close to the border.

Drone mishaps have become a frequent occurrence in contemporary conflicts. Parties involved often employ countermeasures and jamming systems to confuse autonomous weapons and keep them clear of populated areas. Although Romania did not confirm that the latest attack stemmed from countermeasures linked to the Russian drone, other NATO nations have opened investigations, citing previous accusations against Russia for targeting Romania intentionally.

This incident marks a serious escalation—the first time during Moscow’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine that civilians on NATO territory have sustained injuries due to Russian conventional weaponry. Some speculate it could even be unprecedented in NATO’s 75-year history.

Romanian President Nikxo Dan convened a National Defense Council meeting on Friday morning to address the attack. He reported the incident to NATO, urged member nations to enhance defense systems within Romania, and lodged a complaint with the United Nations Security Council. Describing the drone assault as “the most serious incident” in the history of warfare on Romanian soil, he stated:

Events of this unprecedented nature require a decisive, coordinated, and appropriate response at national, allied, and international levels. I categorically declare that the Russian Federation bears full responsibility for this incident due to the irresponsible and indiscriminate manner in which Moscow operates these weapons systems so close to NATO borders.

Following the attack, Romania’s government has faced criticism for not intercepting the drone before it collided with a skyscraper, causing an explosion and fire on the 10th floor. In light of this, President Dan emphasized that while the military had the authority to shoot down the drone, conditions didn’t permit such actions without significantly risking civilian safety.

This issue is prevalent in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where the collateral damage from intercepting a drone can be as devastating as an actual attack on a populated area. The town of Galati is near Ukraine, and depending on the drone’s approach, there may not have been sufficient space to take it down safely.

A spokesperson for General Gheorghe Maxim, head of the Romanian Joint Forces, pointed out legal constraints, which prevent their interceptor weapons from entering Ukrainian airspace. He remarked that Romania is at peace, unable to launch projectiles that could encroach upon Ukraine’s territory.

Before the crash, local residents received warnings to evacuate. The drone struck the apartment building, resulting in an explosion that ignited a fire in one unit. The injured individuals were able to leave voluntarily and were taken to a hospital, with no additional casualties reported.

The civil defense organization confirmed that all explosives on the drone detonated, meaning no further explosives needed to be dealt with, and temporary accommodations were established for those affected by the destruction.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte emphasized the alliance’s commitment to defending its members and urged Russia to cease hostilities. “I have reaffirmed NATO’s readiness to defend every inch of our territory. We will bolster our capacity to deter and defend against all threats, including drones,” he stated on Friday.

“Russia’s reckless actions pose a threat to us all. Their continued targeting of civilians and infrastructure in Ukraine reinforces that the repercussions of their unlawful aggression extend beyond our borders.”

As a NATO member and the easternmost EU member state, Romania has received strong backing. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen remarked that Russia has “crossed another red line,” expressing full solidarity with Romania and its people. She indicated that efforts would continue to apply pressure on Russia, particularly as they enhance security on their eastern borders, with a new sanctions package in preparation.
