Navarro Critiques Bolton Amid Investigations
On Tuesday, Peter Navarro, a trade adviser at the White House, leveled accusations against John Bolton, a former national security adviser, alleging he acted against “America’s secret interests.” This remark followed a search of Bolton’s home and office conducted by federal agents just days prior.
Navarro, who has been vocal about various administration issues, claimed Bolton’s 2020 memoir, *The Room Where It Happened*, included sensitive information that should have remained confidential. He suggested that the book went beyond mere gossip, implicating Bolton in sharing privileged conversations held in the Oval Office.
Bolton, who served under President Trump for about 17 months, is reportedly under investigation for his handling of classified materials. In referencing a judge’s 2020 statement, Navarro noted the difficulty in preventing the book’s release, suggesting it was too late to act now.
Navarro has, throughout Trump’s presidency, frequently been at odds with other White House officials, specifically calling attention to certain parts of Bolton’s book. He pointed to Bolton’s disclosures regarding his discussions about Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro and negotiations with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, as well as private conversations among NATO allies.
“This isn’t about service or patriotism; it’s about profiting from American secrets,” Navarro declared.
This op-ed appeared following the federal search of Bolton’s residence. Bolton, known for his critical stance on Trump, especially regarding foreign policy, has not publicly addressed the search. Meanwhile, Trump has commented on Bolton’s actions, particularly regarding the handling of the Ukraine conflict.
The search has raised alarms among Democrats and Trump’s adversaries, who worry about potential retaliation against those who oppose the president. Trump has maintained he was unaware of the search prior to its execution.
Additionally, Navarro faced his own legal troubles last year, receiving a four-month prison sentence related to his refusal to comply with a Congressional subpoena regarding the January 6 Capitol incident.
