Navy Chief's Appointment Ended Due to Relationship with Married Colleague

The British government announced that the first sea lord of the Royal Navy had advocated for moral reforms within its ranks, but following revelations earlier this year, he has stepped back from his responsibilities.

Sir Ben Key, who until today served as an admiral, has been removed from his position in Naval Service and stripped of his committee document, which is typically issued by the King to appoint officers and is only revoked for serious misconduct.

A statement from the Ministry of Defense referenced Prime Minister Tony Laddakin, who succeeded Key as the first lord of the sea.

“We thoroughly investigate all claims of inappropriate behavior and take decisive action against anyone found to have breached our standards, regardless of their rank.”

In the British Army, officers typically retain their rank after retirement, but Key’s dismissal from Navy Services seems to have resulted in the loss of his title, even though he held that title for over three years.

Key, who is married with three children, has faced scrutiny following claims of extramarital relationships that surfaced in May 2025. Reports indicated he was involved with subordinate female colleagues, and the military strictly prohibits such disparities to avoid creating exploitative dynamics.

Former Admiral Key expressed remorse in a statement on Wednesday. He said, “I deeply regret my actions last spring. It’s far below the standards I set for myself and the Royal Navy. I accept the decision made by the Council of Defense and I’m truly sorry for those I have personally hurt.”

This incident has become notably controversial linked to Key’s term as the first marine lord, as the evolving culture within the British military is often challenged by criticisms regarding harassment, bullying, and sexism. He mentioned that he’s initiated efforts to foster improvements in cultural, behavioral, and leadership issues within the Royal Navy.

This initiative was introduced following a change in naval regulations that allowed women to serve on submarines, which unfortunately led to further incidents of “mystery, bullying, and other unacceptable behaviors” during missions. Reports documented that actions accepted by Admiral Key included addressing “unacceptable sexual behavior” under a strict zero-tolerance stance, reinforcing the command team’s responsibility regarding social propriety.

In a 2022 statement, Key had asserted a “zero tolerance” policy against sexual assault and exploitation, expressing disbelief over the existence of a “completely unacceptable” culture of behavior. He committed to eradicating that culture and stated that anyone acting incorrectly would be removed from service.
