US Naval Officer Charged with Murder After Wife Found Dead
A U.S. naval officer is facing the death penalty following the discovery of his wife’s body in a hotel room in Japan. Lt. Col. Christopher Olsen was formally charged during a preliminary hearing at Naval Base San Diego on Wednesday.
His wife, 37-year-old Jessica “Jesse” Arguinzoni Olsen, was discovered strangled in a room at Hotel Sol in Fukuoka on October 27, 2023. This hotel is located roughly 130 km from the base where Olsen was stationed from November 2022 to December 2023.
Reports indicate Jesse sustained a blunt force injury to her head, with evidence suggesting strangulation involving damage to her jaw and hyoid bone. The Naval Criminal Investigation Bureau (NCIS) alleges that Olsen beat and strangled her in their hotel room.
Surveillance footage shows the couple checking into the hotel on October 25. Olsen was seen leaving alone just two days later. After hotel staff discovered Jesse’s body, they alerted the authorities. Although Olsen was initially questioned, he was not arrested at that time.
Currently, Olsen faces charges of murder and obstruction of justice under military law. If convicted during a court-martial, he could be sentenced to confinement, dishonorable discharge, or even death.
Jesse’s family is still reeling from her death, expressing frustration over the slow progress of justice. “It took five months for LCDR Christopher Olsen to be charged, and now we face more waiting. There’s no timeline or clarity on the legal process ahead,” a family member noted.
They described feeling blindsided, stating they never suspected any issues between Jessica and Olsen, pointing out that communication with friends and family had declined over the months.
Jessica and Christopher Olsen met while attending the State University of New York at Oswego and were married in August 2009. Olsen enlisted in the Navy in 2014 and was promoted to surface warfare officer in July 2023.
