The 2026 NBA Draft lottery is shaping up to be one of the most significant in recent memory, though it’s not solely because of a standout future MVP candidate. What makes this draft notable is that the top four prospects all have the potential to become franchise-changing players. While Cameron Boozer is considered the best of the bunch, AJ Divanza seems to be the frontrunner for the top pick, and Darrin Peterson has a solid following as well. Don’t forget North Carolina’s Caleb Wilson, who has tremendous upside too.
The sheer talent available is one element that raises the stakes for this lottery. The NBA is moving quickly with anti-tank reforms intended for next year’s draft, which will flatten the odds to an extent, essentially randomizing the draft order. Under the new rules, the team at the bottom of the standings can only drop to the fifth pick this year, but next season they could fall as far as 12th overall.
These factors elevate the importance of this draft. Check out the latest mock draft and see our ideas on which teams could really use a fortunate break during the lottery. Now, let’s assess how each lottery team ranks in terms of urgency to land a top-four pick.
14. Oklahoma City Thunder
Honestly, if the Thunder have a 7 percent chance of hitting the top four, the rest of the league might be in real trouble.
The Hornets, having put up the best net rating since January 1, already seem to embody the future of the Eastern Conference. They likely will be a strong team next season regardless, especially with multiple teenage draft picks that could add two solid long-term contributors.
For the Pacers, the stakes are even higher. If they don’t land a top-four pick, it goes to the Los Angeles Clippers from the Ivica Zubac trade. Still, it’s hard to describe them as “desperate,” considering they recently reached the NBA Finals with a healthy Tyrese Haliburton. Hopefully, he can recover quickly from his shingles and get back on the court after his Achilles injury.
This year’s Hawks have already shown promise by taking two games from the Knicks in the first round, and they boast a talented young core featuring Jaylen Johnson. While Atlanta seeks a true top prospect this draft, even a pick around No. 8 should still point them toward a bright future.
The Heat seem stuck in an awkward place. They’re good enough to aim for play-in tournament contention but not quite bad enough for a shot at the top pick. Next year’s lottery rule changes might actually work in Miami’s favor, as they are consistently hovering in the middle. These lottery reforms could serve as a much-needed lifeline for them.
The Mavericks faced some tough luck last year trying to get Cooper Flagg, and now they need to secure another solid pick this year to pair him with a co-star. It’s crucial, especially since Dallas won’t control their picks between 2027 and 2030. With Flagg likely to emerge as a star next season, the future looks promising, even if they don’t land in the top four.
The Grizzlies appear to be moving on from Ja Morant, having already traded Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. They’ve got a decent young core with Zach Eady and Cedric Coward, and I believe this franchise can continue to discover promising talent in the draft. Winning the lottery would be great for them, but they’re not in a position where it’s absolutely necessary.
Even if their pick doesn’t drop out of the top four, the Jazz should have a decent season ahead. With Lauri Markkanen, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Keyonte George as reliable cornerstones, ace Bailey could also take a significant step forward in his second year. Securing Divanza or Peterson would really complete the picture and elevate Utah’s chances of becoming a contender.
The Warriors are coming to terms with the fact that they may not be able to compete effectively during Stephen Curry’s optimal years. Moving up to the top four won’t guarantee a return to the top, but it could provide a feasible strategy for when Curry steps away from the game. If they miss out on lottery luck or don’t hold onto their pick, there’s a good chance they could experience a significant decline.
Chicago’s roster is shaping up to resemble a bottom-three team ahead of the offseason. With ample cap space and two top-15 picks in this draft, their situation isn’t entirely bleak, especially since Arturas Karnisovas is no longer a decision-maker. New executive vice president Bryson Graham seems to have a more long-term vision for the team’s struggles, but a touch of lottery luck could really help in turning things around. Despite being one of the worst teams in the league over the past decade, the Bulls haven’t hit the top three since Derrick Rose’s heyday.
The Wizards made trades involving Anthony Davis and Trae Young to expedite their rebuilding phase, but AD doesn’t seem particularly thrilled in Washington. They do possess a promising young core with Alex Sarr after a challenging few seasons, but they’re still searching for a true franchise player. If the Wizards fall in this draft lottery and can’t secure a commitment from Davis, they might risk dropping further down the ladder once the new lottery odds come into play.
The ongoing Giannis Antetokounmpo trade situation has left the Bucks in a tough spot. With Milwaukee soon set to offer him a max contract extension, the outcome could define the franchise’s future. Should Giannis decline, the team’s owner has indicated a willingness to trade him. A stroke of luck in the lottery could substantially shift the trajectory of this team, with or without Giannis involved. They could potentially secure up to the No. 2 pick, but that’s contingent on the Hawks securing the No. 1 slot.
The Nets had five first-round picks in last year’s draft, but it’s doubtful any of those players will emerge as the franchise cornerstone they desperately need. Presently, Brooklyn relies on a lower tier of players and is in dire need of a young star to invigorate their lineup. This draft may be their last shot to secure a premium player until 2028 since they must trade picks with Houston next year.
It’s not that the Kings didn’t intend to tank; it’s more that they unintentionally constructed a struggling team. Sacramento’s roster is aging and costly, with key players missing as contracts expire. If luck doesn’t come their way this year, it’s hard to see how they can compete effectively in the West. The newly adjusted odds don’t favor them, and they likely have the least young talent among any team in the league at this point. It’s certainly a thought to see more high picks land in the East to help balance things out, but right now, the Kings could really use a stroke of luck.
