The 2023 NBA Draft certainly wasn’t anything intriguing, at least when it came to the No. 1 overall pick. For months, Victor Wenbayama had solidified himself at the top of draft boards. San Antonio Spurs With him winning the 2023 NBA Draft Lottery, it was clear that Wembleymania was heading to the Lone Star State as the draft began in earnest starting with the No. 2 pick.
That’s not the case this year.
The 2024 NBA Draft begins later tonight, changing the league to a two-day event this season, and no one knows who will be the No. 1 overall pick. Will it be Alex Sarr, the athletic big man from France who has risen up draft boards with his massive wingspan and defensive skills? Maybe one of the guards from Kentucky? Reed Shepard might not have a lot of creativity and promise, but his shooting skills are top-notch and he showed a knack for creating turnovers on the Wildcats’ defense. Rob Dillingham is small by NBA standards. Probably historically — but he does have good ball-handling skills and great potential as a shooter.
The other two options for the No. 1 overall pick are Serbia’s Nikola Topic and G-League player Ron Holland. Holland looked like a likely No. 1 overall pick a few months ago, but a losing season with the Ignite caused his draft value to drop a bit. Topic got off to a slow start with the Mega in the Adriatic League and then suffered two injuries, the second of which was a partially torn ACL.
But the upside, especially coupled with his age (Topic won’t turn 19 until August), is immense.
Oh, before I forget, Bronny James is with all of us, including his father, waiting for news on where he’ll land.
