After just one game in the semi-final matchup between the Cavaliers and the Pacers, it’s evident that Cleveland faces a considerable challenge with Tyrese Halliburton on the Indiana roster.
On Sunday, Halliburton showcased his skills, dropping 22 points and dishing out 13 assists, while also connecting on six three-pointers from 15 attempts, leading the Pacers to victory in Game 1.
Halliburton’s unique blend of size, shooting ability, and familiarity poses a specific challenge for the Cavaliers. Despite winning 64 games in the regular season, Cleveland struggles with perimeter defense against players like him.
In response, the Cavaliers rotated Max Strus, Ty Jerome, and Sam Merrill to try and contain Halliburton.
The Pacers strategically exploited matchups, targeting Cavaliers Center Jarrett Allen with pick-and-rolls, leaving the 6-foot-9 player vulnerable along the three-point line.
During a crucial stretch featuring Allen against Halliburton, the Pacers soared with 26 points, with Halliburton contributing 14 points, four assists, and having a significant impact on the game.
Adding to the Cavaliers’ defensive woes is the uncertain status of Evan Mobley, who is questionable due to an ankle injury ahead of Tuesday’s game.
Without Mobley, Allen is even more exposed to Halliburton’s playmaking.
The Cavaliers are also looking to have point guard Darius Garland back after he missed Game 1 with a toe issue.
Nonetheless, Garland’s height—only 6 feet 1—doesn’t provide much advantage when he shares the court with Halliburton.
Expect Halliburton to continue dominating the ball while the Cavaliers search for answers, likely leading to another impressive scoring night for him.
Suggested bet: Tyrese Halliburton to exceed 28.5 points and assists combined.
