NBA takes action against 76ers' Paul George for violating anti-drug program rules

NBA Suspends Paul George for 25 Games

Paul George, the Philadelphia 76ers forward, has been handed a 25-game suspension by the NBA for breaching the NBA/NBPA Drug Prevention Program, as announced by the league on Saturday.

Details regarding the specifics of George’s violation haven’t been shared, but the nine-time All-Star mentioned in a statement to ESPN that he “took inappropriate medications.” He explained, “I’ve spoken about the importance of mental health over the years. Recently, while pursuing treatment for my personal struggles, I made the mistake of using the wrong medication. I fully accept responsibility for my actions and sincerely apologize to the Sixers, my teammates, and Philadelphia fans for misjudging this situation.”

George added that he plans to utilize his time away to ensure he’s mentally and physically ready to support the team upon his return.

This suspension marks George’s first offense, as per an agreement established between the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association. Due to this suspension, he stands to lose approximately $11.7 million from his $51.7 million contract, which breaks down to about $469,691.72 for each missed game.

George is anticipated to be eligible for a return on March 25, when the 76ers are set to face the Chicago Bulls. At that time, only 10 games will remain in the regular season.

As of Saturday, the 76ers were in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, holding a record of 26-21. When George plays, the team has secured a 16-11 record, compared to 10-10 when he’s absent.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
