NBA Offseason: Trade Rumors Heat Up

The NBA offseason is just around the corner, and while the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs are poised to shine in the 2026 NBA Finals, the rest of the league, all 28 teams, are preparing for player changes. The trade market is buzzing, particularly with Giannis Antetokounmpo possibly leading the charge, opening the door for other significant moves.

Let’s take a look at some of the trade rumors circulating during this Finals period.

Hornets and Kings Consider Deal for Domantas Sabonis

The Charlotte Hornets are looking to boost their presence in the Eastern Conference next season. After a strong finish to the regular season with a 33-16 record since January 1, they still faced challenges, notably in the play-in tournament, where their lack of size became evident.

Now, the Hornets are reportedly in discussions with the Sacramento Kings about a trade involving Domantas Sabonis. According to Sam Amick from The Athletic, Charlotte holds the 14th and 18th picks in the upcoming NBA Draft, and Sacramento is interested in one of those picks in exchange for the skilled big man. As of now, the Hornets seem reluctant to accept that offer.

Sabonis, a three-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA selection, recently turned 30 and has two years left on his contract, worth $94 million. The Kings face potential luxury tax issues next season if they don’t reduce their payroll, which might motivate them to finalize a deal. Known for being a strong rebounder, an adept playmaker, a solid scorer in the paint, and a competent 3-point shooter, Sabonis is certainly a desirable asset.

This trade could benefit both teams, but it might be wise for Charlotte to think twice before giving up a top-20 pick given Sabonis’ hefty salary.

Celtics Unlikely to Trade Jaylen Brown, Reports Indicate

Jaylen Brown had an impressive year with the Boston Celtics, especially in Jayson Tatum’s absence. He’s referred to this past season as his “favorite” in his basketball journey. Given that Brown was named NBA Finals MVP for Boston’s championship win in 2024, his value is clear, yet it raises questions about team dynamics, particularly with Tatum set to return.

Rumors suggest the Celtics might be interested in acquiring Giannis, which would necessitate moving Brown to a different team. However, insider Sam Amick stated that there are no indications Boston plans to part ways with him, commenting to local media that any trade discussions involving Brown are on hold.

Brown’s contract is substantial, totaling $183 million over the next three years, making it a significant commitment. The Celtics will be an intriguing team to watch this summer as they attempt to compete with the Knicks for supremacy in the East during the 2027 playoffs.

Pelicans Seek Help for Trey Murphy III, Not Picks

Trey Murphy III is generating interest as a valuable trade option this summer. Now 26, he stands out as one of the better shooters and off-ball scorers in the league.

However, trading a pick for Murphy seems unlikely since the Pelicans finished the last two seasons with disappointing win totals of 21 and 26. Insider Jake Fischer reports that New Orleans is aiming for immediate help rather than future assets, particularly if the situation with Murphy changes.

Other teams might want to approach the Pelicans for a potential deal. Last summer, New Orleans faced criticism for trading an unprotected 2026 first-round pick for D’Eriq Queen, who ultimately became the No. 8 pick in the lottery. With executives Joe Dumars and Troy Weaver unafraid of making bold moves, the Pelicans find themselves in a situation where they may need to enhance their roster considerably.
