2025 NBA Offseason Heating Up
The 2025 NBA Finals feature the Indiana Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder, but for the other 28 teams, it’s already offseason. ESPN Insider Shams Charania has suggested that this summer could be the most chaotic for player movement we’ve ever seen, and rumors are circulating as the drafts and free agency approach.
The first round of the 2025 NBA Draft is set for June 25th, with the second round the following day. Unofficially, NBA Free Agency starts on July 1st, with player and team negotiations kicking off, but actual deals won’t be finalized until July 6th. While the top tier of free agents may be lacking this year, young restricted free agents like Josh Giddy and Jonathan Kuminga are drawing some attention.
Let’s dive into some of the latest NBA rumors about the drafts and free agency that are expected to emerge over the weekend.
Kevin Durant’s Next Move
It’s no secret that Kevin Durant is likely to be traded this offseason. Earlier this year, he was linked to six teams as potential trade partners for the Phoenix Suns. The trade talks are anticipated to ramp up soon, with two teams emerging as serious contenders.
Reportedly, Durant has discussed the possibility of joining the Spurs with a close acquaintance. “I know someone who’s been with Kevin Durant recently, and they’ve mentioned the Spurs,” stated Phoenix Suns reporter John Gambadoro.
Another team expressing interest in Durant is the Toronto Raptors. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst noted that Toronto is looking to make a significant trade this summer. NBA insiders Mark Stein and Jake Fisher also have the Raptors on their list of Durant suitors, suggesting that the path to acquiring him may be more feasible than trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Additionally, the Houston Rockets have emerged as another logical fit for Durant. There have been mixed reports about ongoing conversations between teams. During the 2025 draft, there were whispers that the Suns were looking for a lottery pick in return for Durant. Given Phoenix’s preference for certain players, it will be interesting to see if they target point guard Jace Richardson in a potential deal.
With a new head coach and GM in place, the Suns are hoping to move forward with the Durant trade talks. However, they may find it challenging due to the competition from this year’s standout free agents.
Giannis Antetokounmpo: Staying Put?
There has been ongoing speculation around Giannis Antetokounmpo potentially wanting to leave the Milwaukee Bucks after Damian Lillard injured his Achilles in the playoffs. Without Lillard, it’s hard to see how the Bucks could remain competitive. The team lacks the flexibility with its future drafts and salary cap situation. Given Giannis’s aspirations for multiple championships, many think a change could be likely.
Yet, things may not be so straightforward. According to NBA insider Jake Fisher, there isn’t much belief that Giannis will actually demand a trade. He could be considering the opportunity in the Eastern Conference next year—especially after Jason Tatum’s recent injury, which impacts the Boston Celtics’ chances. Furthermore, Giannis recently welcomed a new baby, which might make him more inclined to stay in Milwaukee for the time being.
Reports also indicate that the Knicks may make a significant offer for Giannis. However, after last summer’s deals, New York lacks the assets needed to pull off such a trade. It seems unlikely that the Bucks would want to take on players like Karl Anthony-Towns.
Ultimately, if Giannis wants to secure another championship while still in his prime, he may need to think about requesting a trade soon. He appears content in Milwaukee, where the organization has been supportive of his ambition. If he’s not ready to leave yet, that’s perfectly valid.
Darius Garland’s Future with the Cavs
After winning 64 games this season, the Cavaliers faced a disappointing early playoff exit at the hands of the Indiana Pacers. With significant free agents on the horizon, including Ty Jerome, De’Andre Hunter, and Sam Merrill, Cleveland is gearing up for a challenging summer with potential salary cap constraints on the way.
Cavs owner Dan Gilbert has historically spent to maintain competitive teams, but the front office will need to think creatively moving forward.
Could Darius Garland, the 25-year-old All-Star point guard, be on the trading block? ESPN’s Brian Windhorst indicated that the Cavs might be open-minded about the idea.
Garland’s impressive skills were somewhat overshadowed by an injury that hindered Cleveland’s playoff performance. If the Cavs do consider trading him, they might expect a solid young player and a draft pick in return.
Looking ahead, the Cavaliers could have a promising position in the Eastern Conference next year. With the Pacers and Knicks as key competitors, the landscape of the conference might change due to injuries among other teams. This summer could be an opportune moment for Cleveland to enhance their roster even further.
