The lead writer for PHNX Sports covering the Phoenix Suns has made accusations against conservative activist Charlie Kirk, claiming he has perpetuated “hate rhetoric,” and responded to criticisms regarding “genocide propaganda that fosters prejudice.”
Kirk, 31, was shot and killed after delivering a speech at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. He was the founder of Turning Point USA (TPUSA) and died from injuries at a local hospital in Utah.
In a series of posts on X, Gerald Bourguet, who identifies as the principal Suns writer at PHNX Sports, accused Kirk of promoting hatred “every day.”
“The difference in political opinions doesn’t equate to spreading hateful rhetoric regularly, and not acknowledging a life devoted to that cause isn’t the same as endorsing gun violence,” Bourguet stated. “We’re crystal clear about this.”
Bourguet then criticized the idea that he should extend sympathy towards Kirk, even mentioning their familial connection.
“He was my father.”
“When mass shooting victims were young children, many didn’t care about making any effort to curb gun violence. And those innocent kids didn’t promote the coverage of tragedy or the way Kirk benefited from this profound irony.”
“If today’s ‘political violence’ upsets you, if the footage frightens you, or if my reaction bothers you, consider why your response differs regarding school shootings, mass deportations, or the numerous videos (backed by Kirk) showcasing horrific murders in Gaza.”
“I’m not concerned whether you deem this insensitive or untimely in light of the deceased. A lot of you seem more focused on appearing like a courteous *good person rather than taking a stand to condemn hatred.”
Ironically, while calling others out for lacking “backbone,” Bourguet’s X account restricts replies only to his mentions. Essentially, he silences criticism and avoids engaging with dissenters.
This contrasts with the approach that Charlie Kirk was taking when he was fatally shot.
