The recent assassination attempt against former President Trump comes in the wake of “increasingly incendiary rhetoric” and “baseless claims” from his campaign, NBC's Lester Holt noted.
While reporting details about the incident on Sunday when Secret Service officers opened fire on a reportedly armed man at President Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, Holt linked the incident to a bomb threat against Springfield, Ohio, linking the two to political rhetoric.
“Today's assassination attempt comes amid escalating violent rhetoric on the campaign trail, as Mr. Trump and his running mate, J.D. Vance, continue to make unfounded claims about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, and there was a new bomb threat in that town this weekend,” Holt said.

NBC correspondent Maggie Vesper reported, “Lester, long story short: Springfield, Ohio, has been hit by threats in recent days, shutting down government buildings, schools and hospitals. Today, a local college campus was effectively locked down after authorities reported a mass shooting threat aimed at Haitians, which authorities say is a false online conspiracy theory that Haitian immigrants in the city are eating people's pets.”
Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance, speaking with NBC's “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker, denied similar accusations linking him to the alleged bomb threats.

“A building was shut down in Springfield this week because of a bomb threat. Haitian immigrants say they fear for their lives. Senator, aren't you doing the same thing you once called reprehensible behavior?” Welker asked on his Sunday morning show.
“First of all, Kristen, we condemn any act of violence and any threats of violence. But, Kristen, the reason I've changed my mind about Donald Trump is actually completely highlighted by what's going on in Springfield, because the media and the Kamala Harris campaign are calling the residents of Springfield racists,” Vance said. “They're lying. They're saying reports about immigrants eating geese are fake. And they're completely ignoring the public health disaster that's happening in Springfield right now.”
