NC governor says Biden can win state

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D) said Wednesday that he believes President Biden can win the state in this year’s upcoming presidential election.

Cooper: “I believe President Biden can win North Carolina” said on semaphor World Economic Summit. “And the campaign obviously believes that because they’re invested in it. And they’re there.”

The Biden campaign has set its sights on flipping the Tar Heel State in the next presidential election after former President Trump carried the state in both the 2020 and 2016 elections.

“[T]“This was President Biden’s narrowest defeat in 2020,” Cooper said, pointing to the 1.3% margin. He added that the state is “the third fastest growing state in the nation” and that “a lot of college-educated people are moving to North Carolina.”

Trump leads Biden by 3.4 percentage points in North Carolina, according to The Hill/Decision Desk’s average poll, with Trump holding 48.3% and Biden 44.9%.

But Dolly McMillan, the Biden campaign’s North Carolina communications director, told The Hill the campaign is optimistic.

“North Carolinians need to know that while President Biden is fighting for us, Donald Trump is fighting for billionaires, big corporations, and extreme policies that hurt our families and our economy. I know there are,” McMillan said.

“Our campaign will continue to communicate with every corner of this state to reject President Trump’s attacks on our families and move forward with President Biden for another four years.”

Cooper said in February that the 2024 race is a “tough choice” between Biden and Trump.

“But the choice will be: do we want a president who wakes up every morning and thinks about the American people?” Cooper said at the time. “Or do you want a president who wakes up every morning and thinks about himself? And that’s going to be a tough choice.”

The Hill has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.

This year again, a fierce race for Cooper’s position will be held in North Carolina. North Carolina’s current attorney general, Josh Stein (Democratic), will face current lieutenant governor Mark Robinson in a highly anticipated gubernatorial race in November.
