RAILY, N.C. (WITN) – Health insurance coverage for thousands of families across our state is in scope after major providers announced they would cease operations at the end of June.
The NC League of Dunicitality Health Benefit Trust will end operation on June 30th.
It offers government employees and their families health benefits, including medical care, vision dentistry, and life insurance.
Many local governments are members of the NC League, but they don't all get medical insurance through trusts.
Our Witn's first warning research team learned that it is mainly small communities that feel the impact, at least in the East, but the impact of people is summed.
Statewide, this will affect around 6,500 subscribers and their dependents, according to the NC League. This is an additional 1,500 people. That totals around 8,000 people.
Witt called more than dozens of towns and cities in eastern Carolina to find out Grifton, Farmville, Plymouth and Maysville were looking for health insurance coverage.
In a statement sent to Witn, the league gives more insight into its decision.
The affected communities said they were searching for new coverage and they had been there for a while.
There are quite a few members who are not affected by these changes as they are not covered by health insurance through the trust. This includes Newbern, Greenville and Washington.
