NC Republican compares Donald Trump to Black person in segregated South

North Carolina Republican Rep. Dan Bishop compared former President Trump’s current legal situation to that of black people in the segregated South.

“It’s almost as bad as Alabama was in 1950 … in terms of getting justice if you were black,” Bishop said. said on Monday “And that’s exactly what they did in New York, so there was something fundamentally wrong. And those who attack me for saying that can attack me all they want,” he said on Charlotte radio station WBT’s “Pete Culliner Show.”

The former president on Thursday became the first former U.S. president to be convicted in a criminal trial after a jury found him guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records related to hush money paid during a campaign to cover up an alleged 2016 affair.

Referring to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and special counsel Jack Smith, Bishop said, “At the end of the day, these people have no excuse for knowingly using their power improperly or for not knowing about it, and they should be charged with election interference.”

Bishop, the North Carolina attorney general candidate, also commented on Trump’s ruling on Friday. In a post To Social Platform X.

“Election interference to ‘get Trump,'” Bishop said in one post. “This has never been about justice. It’s about rigging and weaponizing our justice system against those who threaten their hold on power. We must end the left’s legal wars in November.”

Rep. Jeff Jackson (R-Nashville), who is running against Bishop for attorney general in the Tar Heel State, fired back at Bishop with his own post about X.

“This is my opponent for attorney general, and he has summarily dismissed 34 unanimous jury verdicts as ‘fraudulent,'” Jackson said. In his answer he said“He’s never been a prosecutor, that much is clear. It’s one thing to disagree with a jury, but to say the whole thing is rigged is disingenuous and destructive.”

The Hill has reached out to Bishop’s office and campaign for comment.
