NC State Parts Ways with Head Coach Dave Doeren
North Carolina State has announced the dismissal of head football coach Dave Doeren, which came on Saturday following the team’s recent loss to Stanford that dropped their record to 3-4 for the season.
Athletic director Boo Corrigan expressed gratitude for Doeren’s contributions to the program in a statement. He noted, “I want to thank Coach Doeren for his service and contributions to NC State, and for always representing the university with pride. I appreciate his leadership during his 14-year tenure and the passion he brought to this role. We wish Dave, Sara, and his family the best in the future.”
The university has stated that a “national search” for Doeren’s replacement will commence immediately.
Doeren had been with NC State since 2013, following a successful stint at Northern Illinois where he led the team to a 23-4 record. His first season with the Wolfpack was challenging, ending with a 3-9 record, but he eventually guided the team to become regular participants in bowl games.
Under his leadership, the Wolfpack appeared in 11 bowl games over 13 complete seasons, making it to six consecutive bowls recently. However, this season has seen them struggle, sitting at 1-3 in ACC play.
After the loss to Stanford, Doeren remarked, “It starts with me. The guys didn’t play well enough which means I didn’t have them ready.”
His overall record at NC State stood at 98-73, with over half of his seasons ending with winning records.
In the interim, Todd Goebbel, who has been with the coaching staff since 2019 and serves as the running backs coach and special teams coordinator, will take on the role of interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
The new chapter for NC State will officially kick off on Halloween when the team plays against California. Doeren’s firing marks the second coaching change this season, following Maryland’s decision to part ways with Mike Locksley earlier in the week.
