Neil McDonough Stands Firm on Personal Boundaries in Hollywood
Actor Neil McDonough has opened up about the ethical lines he refuses to cross in his career. During a recent episode of the podcast “The Last Rodeo,” he shared insights into why he chose to step back from acting roles that put him in compromising situations.
When asked by the host to elaborate on the circumstances that led to him being blacklisted, McDonough explained, “I made a deal with myself that I wouldn’t kiss another woman on screen.” He candidly admitted that it was a personal choice driven by his family values. “I don’t want to put my wife through that,” he added, referring to the potential impact on his marriage.
Hollywood and Personal Boundaries
McDonough, now 59, remarked on how those boundaries didn’t align well with the Hollywood industry, which ultimately affected his career. “Hollywood turned me on completely,” he expressed. “I’ve lost almost everything you can imagine.” He didn’t just mean material possessions; it was about his identity as an actor—a role he deeply valued. “Everything changed,” he reflected, “when I stopped drinking. The clouds just parted for me.” His journey of recovery helped him rediscover his sense of self and purpose.
His commitment to his wife Ruvé has remained a cornerstone in navigating the complexities of his career. “She’s beautiful, and nothing else compares,” he admitted, emphasizing that stepping out of his comfort zone has been a constant struggle.
Returning to the Saddle
In May, McDonough spoke about how he broke some of his own rules for the film “The Last Rodeo.” He was excited to return to Western cinema after working on projects like “Yellowstone.” “I’ve been riding horses my whole life,” he said, although he noted that this particular film offered a different experience. “I wasn’t in a position where I couldn’t kiss a girl,” he admitted, reflecting on his previous stance.
Interestingly, he revealed that getting back into the romantic scenes required some persuasion, especially with his wife, who starred alongside him. “I convinced her to be in the movie because I had to kiss someone at the end,” he laughed, recalling her initial hesitance about acting.
The scene was more than just a film moment for McDonough; it symbolized his faith and dedication to his marriage, despite the pressures that come with being in the entertainment industry.
