“Mail carriers are exposed to potential dangers every day, none more common than encounters with dogs,” said Leanne Theriault, USPS manager of employee safety and health awareness. “It only takes one interaction for a mail carrier to be injured.”

Among states, New York ranked sixth for dog attacks on mail carriers with 296, but the number improved from 321 in 2022.
As in 2022, California topped the list of states with the most dog bite incidents, with 727 dog bite incidents involving mail carriers in the state in 2023, up from 675 in 2022, according to the USPS.
New York City did not make the list of the top 20 cities with the most dog bite incidents, with Los Angeles topping the list with 65 incidents.
The USPS released the national rankings ahead of its National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign, which begins Sunday.
